What happens to your HEIC
JXL uses lossy compression. At the default quality the difference is very hard to see and the file is usually much smaller.
The photo keeps its orientation, so it will not appear sideways.

What is an HEIC file?
The default photo format on iPhones since iOS 11. It stores photos at about half the size of JPG with the same quality, but many Windows PCs, websites and older Android phones cannot open it.
iPhone, iPad and Mac Photos open HEIC natively. Windows needs the HEIF extension from the Microsoft Store.
What is a JXL file?
A modern image format that can shrink existing JPGs by about 20% with no loss, and supports HDR and transparency.
